In 1926, tennis champion René Lacoste created the first polo shirt ever,
designed to be relaxed and elegant on the court. He debuted this
short-sleeved cotton shirt at that year's U.S. Open, shocking the tennis
world and making a unique, albeit appealing fashion statement. Fans
soon dubbed Lacoste "The Crocodile" because of his unconventional
behavior and ferocity during matches, and so he began embroidering the animal's likeness on his blazers and
shirts. Thus, the Lacoste brand was born, and his signature Crocodile
logo would grow to become a beloved symbol of style cherished the world
over.
